Basic necessities are similar to the ones, emphasized in the MDGs, and all of them are essential for leading a life, on which spiritual development can be grounded. After satisfying basic necessities, Buddhist lifestyle involves inner development instead of striving for material sustainability.

In fact, Buddhist lifestyle shares the spirit of servant leadership in the way of serving the community with hearts.

Mr. Keith Wong, Vice Principal, St. Paul’s College, HK realized the importance of nurturing students with servant leadership spirit to serve the community with 40-20-40 approach, that is 40 percentage of time in preparation with hearts for meaningful activities, 20 percentage of time in implementing planned activities with measurements, and 40 percentage of time in post activities follow-up.

“Most of the time, we may overlook the needs of follow-up actions. People need to design how to make the activities sustainable with impacts,” said Mr. Wong.

Under COVID-19, we need to rethink and re-imagine the ways of grooming young people with servant leadership spirit, sustainable development (SD) mindset, and SD lifestyle with “Calmness and Inner Peace”.

During the interview, Mr. Wong mentioned that impromptu talk sharing of Dr. S. Yeung (Asia Ambassador, United Nations UNPRME Sustainability Mindset Working Group Member) to their St. Paul’s students recently not only makes their students realised that talks with minds is important, but also walks with talks is a down-to-earth method to sustain partnership.

Balancing social needs with economic and environmental needs via integration of UNSDGs into curriculum and daily life with 40-20-40 approach is the takeaways from Mr. Wong.
